The Republic of Ireland’s first high-rise development, the Ballymun flats were built in the 1960s to solve a housing crisis in Dublin. Since then, social and economic issues associated with the area have led to prejudice against its residents, many of whom were obliged to leave their homes due to the town’s extensive redevelopment in the 1990s and 2000s.
Frank Berry’s inspiring documentary follows music teacher Ron Cooney and the young students of the Ballymun Music Programme through the creation of a choral and orchestral collection of music by composer Daragh O’Toole, with words by the students themselves. While the film focuses on the incredible talent behind the project, it also gives us a glimpse into the lives of these young artists who have learned to overcome the limitations imposed by others. The community’s spirit and perseverance shine through.
