Crowds gather on O’Connell Street, New Year’s Eve for the live broadcast launch of Teilifís Éireann, celebrating “out with the old”. National figures and guests, including Noel Purcell, Dennis Brennan and Cyril Cusack attend the debut of this exciting new medium.

Produced by Gael Linn, Amharc Éireann (A View of Ireland) is Ireland’s first long-running indigenous newsreel series. It was distributed to cinemas throughout the country to promote the Irish language. Between 1956 and 1964, 267 editions of the newsreel were produced for cinema exhibition.
