‘If there is one thing history teaches, it is that history teaches nothing, man’s nature has changed little through the centuries. Despite progress, people find it more difficult today to live in peace than they did in the past. Each generation has to learn this lesson for itself.’
The Story of Man was a cross-community original stage performance written by Fr Cyril Farrell and hosted by members of the community at the Servite Priory, Benburb. Terence McDonald’s short film documents the process of the Northern Irish cast and crew coming together, with extended clips of the rehearsals and live open-air pageant, as well as interviews with the cast and crew.
The performance comprised several episodes, from the Tower of Babel to man’s reach for the stars, in which the team strives to bridge the gap in their society. Groups from Newry, Lurgan, Portadown, Coalisland and Belfast perform under the direction of Christopher Fitz–Simon. Featuring an appearance from a young Dana, before she won the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest, who leads one of the musical performances.
