Writer and director Louise Bagnall takes us behind the scenes from conception to production of the Oscar Nominated animated short film Late Afternoon.

Inspired by her own two grandmothers and fuelled by a desire to explore the innermost thoughts of an older woman, Bagnall created Emily – an elderly woman suffering with dementia who relives the memories of her youth. The film reclaims and validates the lives of older people and celebrates lives which are long and rich and filled with a colourful tapestry of experience. We are introduced to the team behind the successful film including concept artists Stefano Scapolan and Áine McGuinness, voice actors Fionnula Flanagan and Niamh Moyles and music composer Colm Mac Con Iomaire. The film shows various aspects of the work required to deliver the film – colour schemes, modelling sheets and camera positions – which was completed in an impressively swift ten months.

Late Afternoon is part of F-Rated: Short Films by Irish Women, to see more from the collection click here.
